Ukraine criticized for making female cadets parade in heels

Inspiration

The steady, regular marching step was a marked feature of Roman legions. Vegetius, the author of the only surviving treatise on the Roman Empire's military, De Re Militari, recognized the importance of "constant practice of marching quick and together...Nor is anything of more consequence either on the march or in the line than that they should keep their ranks with the greatest exactness. For troops who march in an irregular and disorderly manner are always in great danger of being defeated..."

How important is marching?

Vegetius explains that it was the first thing soldiers were taught. He writes that it was imperative that Roman soldiers could march at speed. Any army which would be split up by stragglers or soldiers walking at differing speeds would be vulnerable to attack. Therefore, the Roman soldier was trained to march in line and to keep the army a compact fighting unit on the move. For this, explains Vegetius, during the summer months the soldiers were to be marched twenty Roman miles (18.4 miles/29.6 km), which had to be completed in five hours
